She grew up in Philadelphia, PA, and received her B.A. in History from the University of Dallas in 2003. Jane spent three years working in adolescent and youth mental health, both through the Florida Outward Bound Outreach Programs and as a one-on-one mental health worker within Asheville City and Buncombe County Schools. In 2006, Jane got her degree in Nursing and spent a decade working as a Registered Nurse in pediatric health care. Jane joined her husband Andy Cross in a full-time role at TNCA in both non-healthcare roles in 2017 and as a school nurse. She uses her training in pediatrics and mental health services as well as her experience with healthcare case management to serve as a liaison between families, teachers, and services. She brings more than a decade of experience teaching students at the middle school, high school, and college levels—including most recently at UNC Asheville in the First-Year Writing Program, where she taught Academic Writing and Critical Inquiry, a foundational course in critical reading, writing, research, and analysis. During the pandemic, she also helped start a Middle Schoolers in Middle Earth reading circle, which continues today with a new generation of local tweens and young teens—proof that Middle Earth is indeed a place worth journeying back to with a fellowship of readers. (She’s also a fan of second breakfasts, so Hobbiton is her happy place.) Of all the levels she’s taught, Daneen most enjoys working with middle school students. She loves the literature written for this age—rich with wonder, honesty, and complexity—and the students themselves, who are on the cusp of a remarkable shift: they’re beginning not just to absorb knowledge, but to wrestle with it, question it, and make it their own. Dear Families, As we inch closer to the opening of school, I would like to communicate to you our current re-opening plans and procedures. The information below is an outline to aid community understanding and decision-making related to the upcoming school year. As plans are solidified, I will continue to provide more information and details, but I hope the description below allows families to begin planning for August 20th. Please remember, all of our plans are based on current scientific data and community health situation. We must remain flexible and open to change as the pandemic continues to evolve. By August 6th, I am asking each family to choose one of the following options for starting the school year. All options will be a one-month commitment with the exception of moving from in-school learning to 100% virtual learning. A family may move to 100% virtual learning at any time. TNCA may also move the school to 100% virtual learning if necessary. I want everyone to know that TNCA is working as a team to find how to best deliver our unique educational experience in the safest possible way. Things will be different and strange at first, but with everyone's cooperation we hope to keep school open all year long. Our focus is to proceed with caution, adapt as needed, and continually learn as a community how to serve our students. Jane Cross (Copy) Jane Cross Jane Cross is the Director of Admissions and Enrollment. She also fills the role of School Nurse as an R.N. for TNCA. She grew up in Philadelphia, PA, and received her B.A. in History from the University of Dallas in 2003 and a degree in nursing in 2006. Before TNCA Jane worked in mental health fields with adolescents and youth in a variety of ways such as Florida Outward Bound programs, pediatric and adolescent mental health nursing, and pediatric health care. Jane joined her husband Andy Cross in a full-time role at TNCA in 2017. Jane lives in Candler, NC, with Andy and their three children, Georgia, Belay, and Adi. Jon was born and raised in Northern Indiana and received his B.A. in Telecommunications from Indiana University. Before joining the TNCA team, Jon worked in a variety of positions from which he acquired a plethora of experience for use in the classroom. He has worked with at-risk youth on wilderness expeditions, overseen behavior management in middle school classrooms, and worked in the field of finish/fine carpentry. Jake joined the TNCA staff in the fall of 2024. He was born and raised in central Illinois and has spent the last thirteen years living in southern Wisconsin. During this same time period he taught middle school Social Studies in northern Illinois. He taught Social Studies and led an at-risk program, when he wasn’t teaching he worked as president of the teachers’ union, was department chair and coached several sports. Jake received his Bachelors from Western Illinois University, Masters in Teaching from Aurora University and is endorsed in social science and special education. Jake and his wife Katie moved to western Carolina at the same time he joined TNCA. Katie, Jake and their pups Dewey love the adventure that Western Carolina has to offer. Katie joined the TNCA staff in 2020. She was born and raised in Jacksonville, FL, and recently moved to Asheville with her husband, Jacob, and daughters, Evelyn and Mary Maeve. Katie has a B.A. in Secondary English Education from Georgia Southern University, and prior to joining TNCA, she taught middle-school language arts for 9 years in Jacksonville, FL. From 2019-2020, Katie volunteered as a tutor at TNCA as well as tutored several students in World Studies and AP Language at Asheville School. Katie and Jacob live at Asheville School and enjoy spending time attending sporting events and cheering on students. She was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, and has dual citizenship with France. Becca moved to Asheville in August 2021. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and English for Speakers of Other Languages along with a minor in Urban Education from the University of Delaware in 2021. Becca received her Master’s Degree in Special Education from Western Carolina University in May 2024. Prior to joining TNCA, Becca spent her summers working closely with children of all ages as a lifeguard for a summer camp and also conducting private swim lessons. Lori grew up in Northeastern Pennsylvania. She received her B.S. at Bloomsburg University and her teaching certification at East Stroudsburg University. Lori has Montessori certification for ages three through six and is a certified Orton-Gillingham Classroom Educator. Over the years, she has taught kindergarten through sixth grade on the Central Coast of California and Buncombe County Schools. Most recently, Lori taught at Montessori Learning Community in West Asheville for five years. She has resided in Asheville for 16 years. She lives with her husband, Dave, and their children Marlee and Mya.
