Our History

The New Classical Academy was founded in 2006 by Kate Hyde and Kelly Homolka, educators who had a vision for bringing the benefits that their own children drew from homeschooling -- internal motivation, imaginative play, multi-age collaboration, individualized work flow, hands-on learning, extended outdoor time, and fun -- into a more structured classroom setting shaped by the principles of classical education.

Since that time, The New Classical Academy has moved locations, grown in size, expanded academic and extracurricular programs, and adjusted curriculum to meet the ever-changing needs of our students. But the core values and beliefs upon which we were founded remain the same, and we continue to strive to graduate thinkers armed with the tools required for meaningful participation in their community, their lives, and their world.

Why the Spiral ?

The Spiral of Theodorus is a common element of Sacred Geometry and is “a term used to describe the basic building blocks of the universe. This ancient science explores and explains the physical and energy patterns that create and unify all things and reveals the way that the Universe of creation organizes itself. Every natural pattern of growth or movement conforms inevitably to one or more geometric shapes. From the molecules of our DNA to the galaxy we spiral within, life and its forms emerge out of geometric codes….The key to Sacred Geometry is the relationship between the progression of growth and proportion.”

Our Mascot The Griffin

The Griffin was chosen as the TNCA mascot over a decade ago by some of our early students. When given the choice, they went with a mythical creature, the griffin. While most commonly seen in art and mythology of ancient Greece, some evidence shows that the griffin dates as far back as the 4th century in ancient Persia and ancient Egypt. On the island of Crete, archaeologists have discovered depictions of griffins that date back to the 15th century BCE. The griffin has the head and wings of an eagle and the body and tail of a lion. The griffin represents both the wisdom of the eagle and the strength of the lion, which are two traits all of our students at TNCA can get behind! GO GRIFFINS!!!!
